Meta Quest 3 Headset
The School of Engineering IT has a limited number of Meta Quest 3 headsets available through the EBS program for checkout to support research. Access is limited, and requests are reviewed based on eligibility and priority.
Each kit includes:
- Meta Quest 3 Headset (512GB)
- Meta Quest Carrying Case
- Meta Quest Elite Strap
Availability and Prioritization
Applying does not guarantee a headset. SoE IT reserves the right to prioritize and allocate devices based on eligibility, completeness of the request, research need, and available inventory.
Program Details
Headsets are allocated to labs (not to individual students or researchers). Requests must include:
- A designated Lab Manager who will manage the device(s) and serve as the SoE IT point of contact
- A Faculty Sponsor for the lab and request
- A clear research justification and type of research/use case
Priority will be given to labs that have an identified Lab Manager responsible for ongoing device management and communications.
Lab Manager
- Serves as the SoE IT point of contact for the headset(s)
- Responsible for receiving, managing, storing, and tracking the device kit(s) within the lab
- Coordinates check-in/check-out within the lab and ensures appropriate use
- Handles updates, basic upkeep, and communicates support needs or issues to SoE IT
- Ensures the headset is reassigned/returned if staffing or lab needs change
Faculty Sponsor
- Confirms the research need and endorses the request on behalf of the lab
- Provides oversight for appropriate and compliant use in the lab’s research activities
- Supports continuity of responsibility (e.g., if personnel change)
Researchers
- Use the headset for the approved research purpose under the lab’s policies and faculty oversight
- Coordinate access through the Lab Manager (no direct distribution to individual students/researchers)
- Provide required details for the application (research goals, expected usage, timeline, and any special requirements)
Please complete the application form linked on this page. The application requires:
- Lab name and location
- Lab Manager contact information
- Faculty Sponsor contact information
- Research justification and type of research
- Expected number of users, usage frequency, and requested number of headsets
- Any technical or setup requirements
- Use responsibly. Follow the lab's usage guidance.
- Loss/damage reporting. Promptly report loss, theft, or damage to SoE IT.
- Return/reassignment. Devices may be recalled or reassigned if unused or if the lab no longer meets program requirements.
Recommended but not required. Follow your lab's guidelines and policies.
- Use a lab-owned email account for device setup and app purchases. The account must remain with the lab (not tied to an individual).
- Preferred options:
- A shared lab email (e.g.,
labname-vr@stanford.edu) - (or) A mailing list
- A shared lab email (e.g.,
- Do not use personal student/researcher accounts to register the headset, manage the Meta account, or purchase apps/subscriptions.
- Software purchases and licensing should be managed centrally by the lab (via the Lab Manager) to ensure access persists beyond individual personnel changes.
- The Lab Manager is responsible for maintaining account credentials, recovery options, and documenting purchases for continuity and support.
- Review Meta's documentation on App Sharing. Meta Quest headsets can contain up to 3 additional user profiles. App sharing lets you share purchased apps between the different profiles on your device.
