Duo Two-Step Authentication

Alex Keller -

What's Happening?

On December 13, 2014, University IT will update the Stanford WebLogin screens with a new look that aligns with the Stanford Identity guidelines.  To get a sneak peek at the new screens, visit:  https://itservices.stanford.edu/service/webauth/whatsnew. Additionally, we will upgrade Stanford's Two-Step Authentication service using the new Duo Security package. Finally, we're updating the Accounts App to reflect the new Two-Step authentication options.

What is Duo?

Duo is the new two-step authentication service that offers a Duo Mobile App you can use with Stanford WebAuth. The Duo Mobile App allows you to receive a push notification or callback in addition to authentication code and SMS text. With push, you can just tap "Accept" on your device to push through to your intended website. The Duo Mobile App also comes with an authenticator, meaning you no longer need Google Authenticator. With Duo, members of the Stanford community that have a dual affiliation with other organizations (Stanford Health Care or Stanford Children's Health) can use Duo Mobile for their dual affiliations by adding an account to their app. Duo Mobile is available for iOS, Android, and Windows Mobile devices.

What about my current Two-Step method?

On December 13, your current method (SMS text message, Google authenticator, or printed list) will continue to work as it does today, although new users will not be able to set up Google Authenticator as a two step method. Printed list will continue to work, but will be phased out in 2015. It may be replaced with any of the other devices available through Duo, or with a hardware token (available in 2015). The precise date of the distribution of hardware tokens is still in discussion.

How can I get more information?

TheTwo-Step Authentication service site (itservices.stanford.edu/webauth/twostep) will be updated to include information, step-by-step instructions, and short how-to videos.  The new information will be available on December 13. On December 5th, University IT hosted a TechBriefing session on WebLogin and Duo.  The recorded session will be available for viewing from techbriefing.stanford.edu.  You can also review the recorded Blue Jeans session by going to https://bluejeans.com/s/7_4k/.
