Enable Two-Step Authentication for Printed Lists

IMPORTANT: Before starting this setup process, make sure that you have access to a printer. You will need it to create a copy of your printed list.

The printed list option generates a list of two-step authentication codes that you should carry with you. Each code can be used only once. The first code is used to enable the Printed List authentication method. The last code on the list should be saved to generate a fresh list with a new set of authentication codes.

Note: the printed list option is recommended only for those who do not have access to a smartphone and cannot receive text messages.

  1. On your desktop or laptop browser, visit the Stanford Accounts Application.
  2. Click Manage.
  3. Click the Two-Step Auth tab.
  4. Click Enable.

    Note: If the button is labeled Change or Remove, two-step authentication is already enabled. See the Change Two-Step Authentication Method page for instructions.

  5. Read the requirements on this page. Once you are done, make sure that you have a printer available and click continue.
  6. On the Select Authentication Code Mechanism page, click Printed List.

  7. A list with twenty authentication codes is displayed. Click the Print button below this list (make sure to print your list as soon as possible).

  8. When the Print dialog box is displayed on your computer, print this list. Store the printed list somewhere safe but convenient, such as in your wallet or purse.
  9. Close the print window to return to the application and then click continue.
  10. You will be prompted for your authentication code to validate your printed list and complete the two-step authentication setup. Enter the authentication code labelled 1. on your printed list into the Authentication Code box and click verify two-step authentication.

  11. If you've entered the correct code, the Two-Step Authentication Mechanism Enabled page is displayed. Otherwise, you will be prompted to re-enter your six-digit number. Double-check the number that is first on your printed list and try it again.

Using two-step authentication codes with a printed list

When you are prompted by WebAuth to enter an authentication code for two-step authentication, find the next unused code on your Printed List and enter it.

  • Enter codes in the exact order in which they appear on the list.
  • Each authentication code can be used only once.
  • It's a good idea to cross an authentication code off the list once it has been used.

List renewal

Before you use up the first set of authentication codes, you will need to create and print a new list. Please reserve the twentieth and final authentication code for this purpose. Note: if you have set your two-step authentication challenge level to Always, you will need to save an additional code to log in to the Stanford Accounts Application.

  1. Go to accounts.stanford.edu.
  2. Click Manage.
  3. Click the Two-Step Auth tab.
  4. Click Get new printed list. get new printed list buttonGet new printed list button.
  5. Enter the list renewal code from your printed list of codes in the Authentication Code box and click verify authentication code.

  6. A new list of authentication codes will be generated. Click Print and retrieve your printout.
  7. Click continue.
  8. Enter the first number and click verify two-step authentication.
