Once you've installed Google Authenticator on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch you can begin setting up two-step authentication for your Stanford account.

  1. On your desktop or laptop browser, visit the Stanford Accounts Application. Do not use the browser on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch to visit this site.
  2. Click Manage.
  3. Click the Two-Step Auth tab.
  4. Click  Enable.

Note: If the button is labeled Change Mechanism, two-step authentication is already enabled. See the Change Two-Step Authentication Method page for instructions.

    • If you have a 3GS (or later) iPhone, it's recommended that you use your camera to set up Google Authenticator.
      1. Tap Scan Barcode,  located at the bottom of the Google Authenticator application.
      2. Point your camera at the Quick Response (QR) code on the Smartphone Application web page.
    • If you do not have a 3GS (or later) iPhone, or for some reason you cannot use the camera to set up your account, you must set up Google Authenticator manually.

      3. Below that, you will be asked to enter a Key. You can find this key at the bottom of the Smartphone Application page, under step 2b. The key is 26 characters long. You can enter the key with or without spaces using upper or lower case letters (the fastest way is to use lower case letters and no spaces).
      4. Once you have entered this key, tap Done.
  9. Whether you used camera or key, on the Smartphone Application web page, click continue to display the Authentication Code Verification page.
  10. On your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch's screen, you will see a six-digit number. Enter this number in the Authentication Code box and then click verify two-step authentication.

  11. If you've entered the correct code, the Two-Step Authentication Mechanism Enabled page is displayed. Otherwise, you will be prompted to re-enter your six-digit number.

Note: The six-digit number changes every thirty seconds. Enter the number you see on your Google Authenticator screen.
