Am I encrypted?

All Stanford owned computers must be encrypted by May 31st 2015.

Computers with 500 PII records or over must already be encrypted.

Computers with 10 PII or over are required by November 30th 2014 to be encrypted.

To determine if you're currently encrypted please follow the steps below depending upon your operating system.

 

 

Windows 7&8

When you start the computer, BitLocker will interrupt startup and display a message informing you that the system drive is locked. (see screenshot below)

You may also verify encryption by following these instructions.

 

Mac OSX


When you start your computer, FileVault 2 will interrupt startup and display a message informing you that the system drive is locked. (see screenshot below)

You may also verify encryption by going to 'System Preferences' > 'Security & Privacy' > 'FileVault'

If the option to turn FileVault on is available, then you are not encrypted.
